Betis Hand Real Madrid First La Liga Defeat as Mbappé Misses Penalty

José Mourinho’s second spell at Real Madrid began with three wins, but it came to an abrupt halt at La Cartuja when Real Betis claimed a 1-0 victory. Kylian Mbappé had the chance to rescue Madrid deep into stoppage time, only for Álvaro Vallés to save his penalty.

Betis had spent much of the match resisting Madrid’s attacks. Vinícius Júnior struck the post in the first half after Arda Güler sent the ball across the face of goal. Mbappé was also denied twice by blocks from Natan Bernardo de Souza and Marc Bartra.

The hosts finally broke through nine minutes from time. Thibaut Courtois made an excellent save to keep out Nelson Deossa’s header, but Troy Parrott fired in the rebound for his first goal for Betis.

Madrid appeared to equalize when Carlos Espí produced an acrobatic finish from a Vinícius cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the buildup. Mbappé then clipped the crossbar before earning a penalty after Natan’s late challenge on Vinícius. Vallés saved the kick, securing a memorable win that moved Betis level with Madrid on nine points from four matches. The victory came ahead of Betis’ second Champions League campaign, which begins next week.
