BGB detains four Rohingyas allegedly trying to enter India illegally

Four Rohingya refugees, including two women, were detained near Bangladesh’s border with India after alleged traffickers abandoned them and fled, according to the Border Guard Bangladesh.

A patrol team from the Magurmari Border Outpost detained the group at about 6 a.m. near a border marker in the Titihipara area of Panchagarh Sadar upazila. The location was about 600 yards inside Bangladesh, the BGB said. The four were later handed over to Panchagarh Sadar Police Station.

The detainees were identified as Md Enayetullah, 23, and his wife, Zainub Bibi, 21, from Rohingya refugee camp No. 7 in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar. The other couple, Enamul Hasan, 23, and Nur Kalima, 20, live in camp No. 15 in Jamtoli, also in Ukhia.

Subedar Ekabbar Rahman, company commander of the Magurmari outpost, said the detainees told officers during initial questioning that six or seven human traffickers had taken them to the border. The group allegedly demanded Tk 60,000 to help them enter India illegally. The traffickers ran away after noticing BGB personnel and took the detainees’ mobile phones with them.

BGB member Abul Kalam Azad filed a case against six or seven unidentified people under Bangladesh’s Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression Act. Panchagarh Sadar police said preparations were underway to produce the four detainees before a court.

The traffickers fled after sensing the presence of BGB personnel, leaving the four behind.
