Bhotekoshi River Floods Devastate Nepal: 157 Dead, Billions in Damages, Tourists Missing

Devastating floods along the Bhotekoshi River have unleashed a wave of destruction across three districts in Nepal, leaving a trail of death and immense material loss. As of the latest Nepal Police update, 157 bodies have been recovered, with the number of missing persons continuing to rise. Riverside communities in Rasuwa, Dhading, and Nuwakot have been particularly hard-hit, with some entire settlements washed away by the raging waters.

The human toll is staggering, with reports of hundreds missing. The missing include personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, civil servants, and workers from various hydropower projects. The scale of the disaster has also left 403 tourists, both foreign and Nepali, out of contact. Among the foreign nationals, Indian tourists form the largest group, followed by Americans, Australians, and Britons.

Beyond the immediate human tragedy, the economic impact is projected to be catastrophic. The government's preliminary estimate suggests the floods have caused damage exceeding 200 billion Nepalese rupees. Infrastructure has suffered extensive damage, with 35 concrete bridges and 45 suspension bridges swept away. The crucial 40-kilometer road from Betrawati to Rasuwagadhi has been completely obliterated, and the Rasuwagadhi customs point has been destroyed, impacting trade and connectivity.

The energy and tourism sectors have also sustained unimaginable damage. The floods have disrupted transportation networks, affecting cargo vehicles, transport operators, and laborers. The government has pledged to prioritize the rebuilding of essential infrastructure like bridges and roads as it grapples with the immense task of recovery and reconstruction in the affected regions.
