Bielsa's reproach to Uruguay players revealed after elimination: 'You left me alone'

Uruguay's disappointing exit from the 2026 World Cup, finishing as the worst third-place team, has led to internal recriminations. Coach Marcelo Bielsa reportedly confronted his players during their final team meeting, expressing his frustration and a sense of abandonment.

According to Uruguayan journalist Sebas Giovanelli, Bielsa told the squad, "You left me alone," during a tense gathering in Playa del Carmen. This reflection followed a period of internal tension, particularly after Uruguay's loss to Spain, during which Bielsa controversially substituted captain Federico Valverde.

Further adding to the team's dissatisfaction, several players were reportedly upset when the Uruguayan Football Association allegedly canceled return flights. This forced many players to book their own commercial flights home.

Marcelo Bielsa's time as Uruguay's coach concluded with this elimination. Over his 37 matches, the team secured 14 victories, recorded 15 draws, and suffered eight defeats.
