Billund Airport's Profit Surges Fivefold in 2025

Billund Airport concluded 2025 with a significantly improved profit, five times larger than the previous year, reaching 89.3 million Danish kroner after tax. The airport also saw its revenue increase to 986 million kroner from 954 million kroner in the prior year. Airport Director Jan Hessellund attributed the strong financial performance to a year of diverse and robust income streams.

The result can be attributed to a year with several strong income sources.

Key contributors to the enhanced earnings included revenue from passenger traffic, air cargo services, commercial building rentals, parking facilities, and retail operations. Notably, the airport managed to reduce personnel expenses while achieving growth in both its top and bottom lines. This financial success was achieved even as the number of passengers handled by the airport decreased by over 20% during the period.

The decline in passenger numbers is largely a consequence of Ryanair ceasing its operations at Billund Airport approximately a year ago, a decision influenced by a passenger tax that added up to 50 kroner per ticket for departures from Denmark. Following Ryanair's exit, the airport partially compensated for the lost traffic by securing new agreements with airlines such as British Airways, Norwegian, and Wizz Air.

Looking ahead, Billund Airport anticipates recovering some of the lost traffic in the current year. However, Hessellund acknowledged the prevailing uncertainty in the aviation industry, making precise future predictions challenging. He expressed confidence in the airport's ability to generate solid results even in uncertain times, providing a strong foundation for future development and expecting to maintain a healthy and sustainable economy in 2026. Nevertheless, he cautioned that geopolitical and economic instability, coupled with rising jet fuel costs, could negatively impact the year's overall financial outcome.
