Biman Passengers Endure 40-Hour Ordeal After Rome Emergency Landing

Nearly 260 passengers aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight experienced a harrowing 40-hour ordeal following an emergency landing in Rome. The flight, BG306, traveling from Toronto to Dhaka with 259 passengers, was forced to land at Rome's Fiumicino International Airport on Friday due to a technical fault that developed about eight hours into the journey.

For nearly 40 hours, passengers of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight were left grappling with inadequate rest, lack of sleep and difficulties accessing medicines and other essentials after their aircraft made an emergency landing in Rome.

However, the technical problem was only the beginning of the passengers' troubles. Upon arrival, they were allegedly kept inside the aircraft for eight hours without functioning air conditioning, leading to several passengers falling ill. After being moved to the terminal, a significant number faced further difficulties.

Italian immigration authorities did not allow at least 170 passengers without the required visas to leave the airport.

According to Biman officials in Rome, the airline was prepared to provide hotel accommodation for all passengers. However, Italian immigration authorities reportedly prevented at least 170 passengers, who lacked the necessary visas, from leaving the airport terminal. This left these passengers, including families with babies, the elderly, and women, stranded in airport lounges and other areas.

My father had undergone three bypass surgeries and had been unable to sleep throughout the ordeal.

Only passengers holding Canadian or U.S. passports were reportedly able to clear immigration and secure hotel stays. The prolonged wait caused severe physical and mental stress, particularly for vulnerable passengers. Some travelers reported difficulties accessing essential items like diapers and baby food for infants, while others, like one passenger whose father had undergone bypass surgery, struggled with the lack of rest.
