Bishkek Weekend Guide: "Pagliacci," 90s Disco, and Film Classics

Bishkek is set to host a vibrant cultural weekend from June 27-28, offering a rich tapestry of performances and exhibitions for residents and visitors alike. The Kyrgyz National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater will stage Ruggero Leoncavallo's dramatic opera "Pagliacci" on both evenings at 5:00 PM. The opera's plot, inspired by a real-life incident of a theater actor murdering his wife on stage, promises to deliver powerful portrayals of human passion.

Theater enthusiasts can also experience "Yerma" by "Theater 705" at 7:00 PM on June 28. This production delves into themes of patriarchal influence, personal freedom, and the "world of men," drawing from Federico García Lorca's play and blending dramatic text with physical theater. Additionally, the Chingiz Aitmatov Russian Drama Theater will present "Aitmatov" on June 27 at 7:00 PM, a fantasy performance exploring the legacy of the renowned writer through his iconic works like "The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years" and "The White Steamer."

Art lovers have a range of exhibitions to explore. The Gapar Aitiev Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts is showcasing its permanent collections of painting, graphics, sculpture, and decorative arts daily from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM (closed Mondays). From June 12-28, the museum hosts "Pomegranate Garden," an international project by artist Alexander Dilbazi. From June 19 to July 30, the "Cybervision" exhibition will offer a glimpse into a future that can be imagined and built, with musical performances scheduled for June 20.

The "Artmemo" gallery will present a sales exhibition from June 21 to July 30, featuring diverse works by artists including Alexey Kamensky and Zhdyzbek Moldakmatov. The weekend's entertainment also includes the "jinalike.fest" on June 27, a project uniting regional and international dance music stars with a focus on contemporary pop music.
