Blackout in Almaty and regions: Ministry of Energy names the cause

A significant power outage struck Almaty and several surrounding regions on August 14, 2026, plunging large areas into darkness and disrupting essential services. The Ministry of Energy attributed the blackout to a power surge caused by sharp fluctuations in the Central Asian energy system.

This surge activated emergency automated protection systems, resulting in temporary power disconnections for consumers. The national power grid experienced the disruption around 2:30 PM local time. Preliminary data suggests the widespread outages were triggered by an emergency shutdown of 500 kV trunk power lines operated by KEGOC JSC, the system operator.

KEGOC JSC is currently undertaking restoration work, and power has reportedly been restored in several affected regions. However, the blackout has had immediate consequences for the city's infrastructure. Communication disruptions have been reported, and traffic congestion has worsened due to non-functioning traffic lights. Alatau Zharyq Company JSC confirmed that specialists are working on repairs.

Residents have also been warned of potential water supply disruptions as a result of the power outage. The impact has been felt across various city facilities, with reports of issues at the airport. Further updates on the restoration progress are expected from the ministry.
