Blue-White Alliance Backs Ko Wen-je Registration Bid as Critics Call It a Leaderless KMT

Ann Kao registered her bid for a second term as Hsinchu mayor with KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun and former TPP Chair Ko Wen-je at her side, creating a show of Blue-White unity despite the unusual arrangement.

Kao is running as an independent after leaving the TPP. The KMT has not nominated its own candidate for Hsinchu mayor and instead supports her re-election. Seven TPP city council candidates and several KMT council candidates attended the registration event alongside her.

Hsinchu council candidate Chien Kang-ming mocked the alliance as “small blue plus big white.” He said the KMT’s council candidates had lost the party’s mayoral standard-bearer and had therefore become “headless flies.” Chien is running for a council seat in Hsinchu’s East District and supports Ho Chih-yung, a mayoral hopeful from the KMT tradition who did not receive the party’s nomination.

Cheng praised Kao’s ability to withstand pressure and her strong psychological resilience. She said people in Hsinchu would support Kao regardless of political color or party affiliation.

The joint appearance contrasted with the breakdown of coordination in the Zhubei mayoral election. Chien also accused Cheng of having effectively sold out the KMT by choosing to back Kao rather than nominate a party candidate.
