Blue-White scramble for votes: Ying Chia-yu enters Zhongzheng-Wanhua race, increasing pressure on Chung Hsiu-ping and Wu Yi-hsuan

A political contest is heating up in Taipei's Zhongzheng-Wanhua district as independent candidate Ying Chia-yu launches her bid for a city council seat. Ying, the daughter of Taipei City Councilor Ying Hsiao-wei, is stepping in to represent the area, with her mother reportedly facing legal challenges.

At the launch of her campaign headquarters, Ying Chia-yu received congratulatory flower baskets from several Kuomintang (KMT) figures, notably Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu, wishing her a "high vote victory." This backing from senior KMT members underscores the party's interest in the district, even as Ying runs as an independent.

The race is anticipated to be fiercely competitive, particularly within the pan-blue coalition. Incumbent KMT councilor Chung Hsiu-ping expressed concerns about the crowded field, noting that while the pan-blue camp holds about 60% of the vote in the district, at least seven candidates are vying for seats. This situation, he fears, could lead to a "green camp easy to win, blue camp hard to win" scenario, potentially costing the KMT a seat.

Meanwhile, Taiwan People's Party candidate Wu Yi-hsuan is also competing in the same district. Ma Yu-wen, a candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), predicted that the competition between the KMT and the TPP would lead to vote-splitting. The DPP, under mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang, aims to maximize its votes and secure all four of its nominated seats in the district.
