BMW i3 Returns with Electric Series 3 Interpretation, Shocking Price Tag

BMW is reintroducing the i3 nameplate, but this time for a fully electric interpretation of the 3 Series, serving as the second model from its "Neue Klasse" platform. Orders for the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition opened on June 18, ahead of its official market launch in autumn 2026.

The "Neue Klasse" represents a significant technological reset for BMW. The brand's first electric model from this platform, the iX3 SUV, has already impressed with its range, fast charging capabilities, and driving dynamics, even converting skeptics. Expectations are therefore high for the new i3 sedan, which shares the same electric technology but offers a lower profile and reduced air resistance at high speeds, promising even better highway performance and agility.

However, the excitement is tempered by the pricing. The BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition is priced from 331,900 PLN, with the regular i3 50 xDrive set to start around 290,000 PLN. This positions the i3 as more expensive than the comparable iX3 SUV (which costs between 275,000 and 315,000 PLN) and vastly more expensive than the outgoing gasoline 3 Series, starting at approximately 195,000 PLN. The substantial price difference underscores the ongoing high cost of electric vehicle batteries, which remain the most expensive component.

Despite the cost, the new i3 packs a punch. The 50 xDrive First Edition features dual electric motors delivering a combined 469 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.7 seconds. It utilizes a central "Heart of Joy" computer for drive and dynamics control, reportedly reacting ten times faster than previous systems. The vehicle is equipped with a substantial 108.7 kWh battery, which is integrated as a structural element of the body.
