BMW offers voluntary redundancy to nearly half of German admin staff in job cut plan

German automaker BMW is preparing to offer voluntary redundancy packages to approximately 40,000 of its administrative employees in Germany, a move that could lead to the elimination of 8,000 jobs by the end of 2027. This significant reduction targets employees not directly involved in production, representing nearly half of BMW's roughly 85,000-strong workforce in Germany.

The voluntary separation program is slated to run from October of this year through the end of 2027. Sources within the company revealed that negotiations between BMW's management board and its works council regarding this plan lasted about six weeks. The objective is to substantially reduce company costs by 2028, with the majority of departures expected to occur next year.

This initiative by BMW is indicative of wider cost-saving efforts across the German automotive sector. The industry is grappling with several pressures, including lower profit margins on electric vehicles, the impact of U.S. tariffs, and intense competition from Chinese manufacturers. Competitors like Volkswagen are also considering significant workforce reductions, with reports suggesting up to 100,000 job cuts across its brands, while Mercedes-Benz has its own voluntary departure program.

Globally, BMW employs around 154,000 people. The company's decision to implement such a large-scale voluntary redundancy program underscores the financial challenges and strategic adjustments the automotive industry is undertaking to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
