Boakye Agyarko campaign denies rift with Bawumia ahead of NPP chairman election

Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko’s campaign is pushing back against claims that he has fallen out with New Patriotic Party flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia, saying the chairman hopeful fully supports him.

In a statement issued in Accra on August 30, campaign spokesperson Vincent Frimpong Manu also rejected attempts to present the NPP’s collective achievements as the work of individual figures. Agyarko, the campaign said, had instructed his team not to attack other contestants in the party’s October 3 national executive election.

The statement presented Agyarko as a long-serving party figure. It said he helped found the NPP and had served as chairman of the Danquah-Busia Club of North America, the party’s North America coordinator and national campaign manager during the 2012 general election. He later worked as a policy adviser to the party’s presidential candidate in 2016.

The campaign also cited Agyarko’s more than two decades at the Bank of New York and his later service as energy minister. It said he viewed the flagbearer and national chairman as distinct roles: Bawumia leads the campaign and communicates the party’s political message, while the chairman builds and manages the party machinery needed to win elections.

Agyarko’s campaign said he was not seeking the chairmanship as a route to a future presidential bid. It argued that his independence would allow him to lead fairly, unite factions and reconcile supporters from the party’s presidential primary. A separate statement on his plans to rebuild the NPP is expected before delegates decide on October 3.
