Bocas del Toro banana sector revives, reactivating 6,000 jobs and preparing for export restart

The banana sector in Panama's Bocas del Toro province is experiencing a substantial revival, with the reactivation of over 6,000 jobs in cultivation and packing. This significant employment boost is attributed to a surge in market demand and an increased volume of harvested fruit.

Chiquita Panamá, a key player in the region, has adjusted its operations to accommodate the growing demand. Packing plants have extended their workweeks from five to six days, operating in two daily shifts from Monday to Saturday. This intensified schedule aims to ensure the continuous processing of bananas.

Following a closure in 2025, the industry is now focused on officially resuming exports. Chiquita Panamá has confirmed ongoing discussions and direct coordination with the national government to establish the logistics for the initial export shipments. The company anticipates a formal announcement regarding the restart of international commercial activity in the near future.

Alexander Gabarrete, a spokesperson for Chiquita Panamá, highlighted that the implementation of two daily shifts is a direct response to the current harvest flow. He indicated that details for the first export shipment are being finalized, suggesting a prompt resumption of the province's crucial export trade.
