Bolivia Investigates Brazilian Inmate's Death After Prison Firearm Incident

Bolivian authorities are investigating the death of a Brazilian inmate at the Chonchocoro maximum-security prison in the La Paz highlands. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved the use of a firearm, resulting in the inmate's death from gunshot wounds. National Police Commander General Mirko Sokol stated that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, focusing on who fired the weapon, its ownership, and how it was introduced into the facility. The deceased inmate, identified by the initials L.R.S., was serving a 30-year sentence and had been transferred to Chonchocoro due to a history of high-risk violent behavior in other prisons. The General Directorate of Penitentiary Regime reported that L.R.S. initiated the use of the firearm, endangering other inmates and police personnel. Security forces responded by neutralizing the aggressor, but another inmate was wounded and taken to the Hospital de Clínicas for medical attention. Officials are working to determine how the firearm was smuggled into the prison and to identify those responsible for its presence. Those found accountable will face legal sanctions. In response to the incident, security measures at Chonchocoro have been intensified, including comprehensive searches of the facility. Reports suggest L.R.S. had ties to the First Capital Command (PCC), a major Brazilian criminal organization, and had previously been involved in violent incidents, including a grenade explosion in another prison that resulted in fatalities.
