Bolivia: Nine violent deaths recorded during long holiday weekend

Bolivia experienced a violent holiday weekend, with police and public ministry reports indicating at least nine fatalities between August 6 and August 9. The reported deaths encompass a range of incidents, including traffic accidents, an electrocution, a fatal altercation at a party, two violent events in Santa Cruz, and a dog attack in Sucre.

The most tragic incident occurred on Friday, August 7, on the Chulumani-La Asunta highway. Four individuals lost their lives when the vehicle they were traveling in fell approximately 30 meters into an inaccessible area. The victims were en route to another town to purchase spare parts. Their families located the vehicle with the help of local community members after losing contact.

In Cochabamba, a 16-year-old boy died from electrocution while setting up sound equipment for a party in the municipality of Arbieto. He was working with another teenager, aged 17, who sustained severe burns. In Beni, a 16-year-old died after being struck during a party fight in Baures. He was transported to a health center but arrived without vital signs; the alleged assailant has been apprehended.

Santa Cruz reported two violent deaths. In one case, a woman working on a farm died from a shotgun wound inflicted by her employer, who reportedly mistook her for a robber. The incident, involving a 16-gauge shotgun, occurred early Sunday morning on the road to Camiri. In another incident in Santa Cruz, a 47-year-old man died after being stabbed during an argument with his partner at their home in the El Fuerte neighborhood. Preliminary investigations suggest alcohol consumption preceded the dispute that led to the stabbing.
