Bolivia Reschedules Chilean President Kast's Visit Amidst Past Conflicts

Bolivia's Foreign Minister Fernando Aramayo has confirmed that plans are underway to reschedule the visit of Chilean President José Antonio Kast to Bolivia. The trip was initially intended to take place during a period of significant internal conflicts within Bolivia, necessitating its postponement.

"We are finalizing details to ratify the date of President Kast's visit to Bolivia. It was supposed to happen during the time we had conflicts," Aramayo told reporters. He added that the Chilean president's arrival "has been postponed, but it is a visit that is already being rescheduled in these days."

Bolivia and Chile have a long-standing diplomatic rupture, with no ambassador-level relations since 1962, except for a brief period between 1975 and 1978. This break is largely due to Bolivia's unresolved claim for maritime access to the Pacific Ocean. Despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties, both nations maintain consulates in each other's capitals.

Rodrigo Paz, who has governed Bolivia since November, has expressed a desire to initiate a "new cycle" of relations with Chile, focusing primarily on economic and commercial matters, while acknowledging Bolivia's maritime aspirations. Relations have seen some positive evolution since Kast's inauguration in March, with Chile's Foreign Ministry noting a move towards a "positive agenda" aimed at rebuilding trust.
