Bolivian Astrophotographer's Image of Volcanoes and Orion Earns NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day

Bolivian astrophotographer Gonzalo Laserna has achieved a significant milestone, with his image 'Barnard's Loop over Twin Volcanoes' selected by NASA as its Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). This recognition highlights the best in astronomical photography and marks a proud moment for Bolivia's photographic contributions.

The stunning image, also known artistically as 'Cosmic Bridge,' was captured in the Sajama National Park in Oruro. Laserna explained that the photograph was the result of meticulous planning. He initially discovered an exceptional celestial alignment – the constellation Orion setting over the Parinacota and Pomerape volcanoes, known as the Payachatas – through specialized astronomical applications.

Despite initial challenges with a bright moon obscuring the finer details, Laserna took a preliminary shot and submitted it to NASA, where it reached a pre-selection stage. Determined to capture the scene under ideal conditions, he returned in April during the new moon phase. This second attempt yielded the image that ultimately gained NASA's recognition.

Laserna clarified that the final, award-winning image is not a single shot but a composite created from multiple exposures. The complex processing involved stacking 50 photos of Orion aligning with the volcanoes, followed by extensive development and post-processing. The resulting image prominently features the Barnard's Loop, a vast hydrogen emission nebula within the Orion constellation.

This distinction is more than a personal triumph for Laserna; he views it as a national achievement. For years, he has consistently submitted his work to the APOD program, providing detailed technical and scientific information. He believes this success places Bolivia among nations producing top-tier astrophotography, moving beyond its role primarily as a destination for international photographers.

I feel that I am representing Bolivia because until now our country has been, more than anything, a destination for other astrophotographers in the world, this is not bad, but with this achievement I am placing Bolivia on the map of creators of great-level photos.
