Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore will be assigned a security detail after receiving threats on social media. The threats followed the death of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old man who died during a police stop. The decision has raised concerns about the safety of democratic institutions. "When a mayor is forced to live under protection due to threats, it is the free exercise of democratic institutions and the principle of the rule of law that are under attack," stated Enrico Di Stasi, the provincial secretary of the Democratic Party in Bologna. He added that while criticism is part of democracy, death threats and incitement to hatred are not. Police are also on high alert for a demonstration scheduled in the Pilastro district. This follows riots in Bologna the previous week, where a group of protesters clashed with police, causing significant damage and injuring 64 officers.
