Brescia Democrats demand halt to far-right metro patrols

Brescia's Democratic Party has formally expressed its deep concern over the activities of a far-right group known as "Trincea urbana Brescia" (Urban Trench Brescia). The party has sent a letter to the city's prefect and police chief, urging them to halt the group's patrols, which they describe as "black wave" incursions into the urban environment.

The group, identified as belonging to the "Rete dei Patrioti" (Patriots' Network), is characterized by the Democratic Party as comprising movements with "clear neo-fascist inspiration." Their recent actions, particularly a night patrol conducted on July 22 on the metro trains and in problem stations, have drawn sharp criticism. Videos posted on Trincea urbana Brescia's Facebook account show members, clad in black, describing their patrols as a deterrent in areas perceived as unsafe or degraded.

Trincea urbana Brescia claims adherence to an "ethical code," stating their patrols are not vigilante actions. They assert that members carry no offensive weapons, do not provoke, and do not respond to provocations. However, they also state that if they witness vandalism, assaults on women, theft, or robbery, they will "intervene lawfully." This claim of intervention is precisely what alarms the Democratic Party representatives, Roberto Cammarata and Roberto Omodei.

Cammarata and Omodei argue that such activities, regardless of stated intentions, are fundamentally illegal and resemble prohibited vigilante patrols. They contend that these actions pose a risk to public safety and order, which are the exclusive domain of law enforcement and state authorities. The party insists that security is solely the responsibility of the state and implores the prefect and police chief to act swiftly to stop this "worrying, dangerous phenomenon" that could lead to an escalation of violence contrary to legal and constitutional norms.
