Bolzano Mayor Recovers After Heart Attack, Plans Return to Office

Claudio Corrarati, the mayor of Bolzano, is on the path to recovery following a heart attack he experienced on the evening of July 29th. The incident occurred shortly after his return from the last council meeting before the summer break. His wife, Antonella, an nurse, is credited with recognizing the severity of his condition and providing immediate assistance, which was crucial in saving his life.

Now convalescing at home, Corrarati faces the challenge of balancing his unwavering sense of duty with the physical limitations imposed by his health. He described his current condition as "five out of ten," noting his continued weakness and the need for patience and rehabilitation. While initially reported as a minor ailment, Corrarati admitted it was a serious heart attack, and the primary concern now is adapting to a new rhythm of life.

Doctors have strongly advised him to slow down and manage his personal time more effectively. Corrarati acknowledges this necessity, stating he must learn to allocate time for himself alongside his professional responsibilities. He is undergoing rehabilitation and exercises to regain full physical function, a process he anticipates will take time. His planned August 8th to 23rd vacation has been transformed into a period of convalescence.

Despite his health concerns, Corrarati intends to return to his office on August 25th, following final medical check-ups on August 24th. He remains committed to his role but is realistic about the demands, stating he will assess his capacity to handle a full day or if he will need to limit his work to half-days. He reflected on past warnings from those close to him about his unsustainable pace, admitting he had sometimes felt invincible until this health scare.

Corrarati noted a significant increase in emotional stress since transitioning from leading the Cna (Italian Confederation of Artisans and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) to his mayoral role. He cited the demands of political attacks and the need to manage daily administrative tasks as contributing factors to the overwhelming stress he has internalized over the past year.
