Bombers and Riders fans clash over ‘Regina-style’ pizza in Labour Day Classic trash talk

The latest battle between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders has nothing to do with football, at least not directly. Ahead of Sunday’s Labour Day Classic, the teams and their fans are arguing over Regina-style pizza.

The Bombers revived a three-year-old insult on social media Tuesday, saying the square-sliced pizza was still terrible after three years of “reflecting” on the reaction from Riders fans. The team compared it to “a three-week old lasagna” placed on dough and covered with cheese.

Regina-style pizza is known for thick crust, square slices and generous layers of meat and vegetables under cheese. Marina Rubina, a Regina resident, Riders fan and content creator, answered with a video saying she had spent 14 minutes researching reasons to visit Winnipeg and still could not find one. She then ate a slice of pizza.

It’s still terrible. Honestly, it’s worse than we ever thought. It’s like someone took a three-week old lasagna and slapped it on a piece of dough. It’s awful, and our opinion will never change.

“You can come to Regina just to try the pizza. (Then,) it’s already worth it to make the trip,” Rubina said, describing her affection for the local specialty. In Winnipeg, lifelong Bombers fan Cassie Liebrecht called the team’s post hilarious and said the rivalry adds excitement before major games.

Scott Charney, another longtime Bombers supporter, declined to take sides. “I’m a pizza guy so I like all pizza. I’m going to eat it regardless,” he said. The game begins Sunday at 5 p.m. local time at Mosaic Stadium. Saskatchewan is 7-4 and second in the CFL West Division, while Winnipeg is 6-5 after beating the league-leading Montreal Alouettes.
