Bombing at Moscow Restaurant Kills 3, Injures 21; Mayor Calls it 'Cruel Terrorist Attack'

Moscow's mayor has labeled a deadly explosion at a downtown Italian restaurant as a "cruel terrorist attack" after a blast killed three people and injured at least 21 others. The incident occurred at the "Balzi Rossi" restaurant on the evening of August 1st.

According to the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee, a woman attempted to enter the restaurant, located in the landmark Kudrinskaya Square building, with a homemade explosive device. Security guards intercepted her at the entrance, and the bomb detonated, killing the woman, a security guard, and a customer. Twenty-one other individuals sustained injuries.

The restaurant was closed to the public that evening for a "private event." Social media rumors suggest the event was a 55th birthday party for Alexander Chaiko, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces. Russian authorities have not confirmed these details or released the identities of the deceased and injured.

An investigation is underway, but officials have not commented on whether the incident is linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine or other recent explosions and assassinations in Russia. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
