Boniface, Okonkwo star as Nigerians shine in pre-season

Nigerian footballers made their mark in pre-season friendlies across Europe on Saturday, with Victor Boniface and Arthur Okonkwo delivering standout performances.

Boniface netted twice in Bayer Leverkusen's dominant 7-0 thrashing of Sportfreunde Baumberg. The striker, who aims to regain consistency after an injury-plagued previous season, will hope this strong showing provides a platform for a successful campaign at Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was instrumental in Wrexham's narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United. Okonkwo's clean sheet in Helsinki followed an encouraging pre-season, including a penalty save in a previous scoreless draw.

Other Super Eagles players also saw action. Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi featured for Nottingham Forest in their 2-0 win against Notts County. Aina started the match, contributing to a clean sheet in the first half, while Awoniyi came off the bench in the second half. Awoniyi ended the last season strongly, indicating potential for continued impact.
