Book Explores Evolution of 'Commonwealth' Concept in Polish Literature

Jakub Wolak's new book, 'The Idea of the Commonwealth Revealed to Jan Dymitrowi Solikowski at the Sejm of Parczew,' published by the August hr. Cieszkowski Foundation in Warsaw, delves into the evolving understanding of the 'rzeczpospolita', the Polish concept of a commonwealth or republic.

The work examines how this concept was re-semantized within Polish literature during the 16th and 17th centuries. While acknowledging differences from the republican models of northern Italy, Wolak highlights that in Poland, particularly during the reign of the last Jagiellon, the phenomenon was closely tied to the execution of laws and the protection of noble rights and property.

Central to the analysis are the political dialogues of Stanisław Orzechowski, a highly influential and widely read political writer of his time. His writings, originating from the period of the execution sejms (1562–64), significantly impacted contemporary readers, including those present at the sejms, and subsequent generations. Wolak's focus on Orzechowski's later works is threefold: their authorship by a prominent yet enigmatic figure, the author's deliberate engagement with the discourse of the republican nobility, and the deep roots of these writings in pre-modern thought about the commonwealth, thus bridging different historical eras.
