Bookfest 2026, Romania's largest book fair, kicks off with Bulgarian guest of honor

Bookfest, Romania's premier international book fair, has opened its doors for its 19th edition, marking 20 years since its inception in 2006. The five-day event, held at Romexpo, promises a rich program with 158 exhibitors and 455 cultural events, including book launches, debates, and autograph sessions. Public access to the fair is free.

This year, Bulgaria takes center stage as the guest of honor, bringing a delegation of 14 prominent writers, poets, and children's literature authors. Among them is Georgi Gospodinov, widely regarded as one of Europe's most significant contemporary authors. Gospodinov is set to engage in a highly anticipated dialogue with renowned Romanian writer Mircea Cărtărescu on the opening day.

The fair's extensive schedule features a diverse range of activities. Visitors can look forward to book presentations by both Romanian and international authors. Notable events include the launch of "Hariclea Darclee and the Mystery of the Lost Score" by Corint Publishing, and discussions on education at the Polirom stand. Humanitas will host a collective non-fiction launch and a round table dedicated to Ismail Kadare.

Bookfest continues to be a cornerstone of Romania's cultural landscape and a vital hub for the publishing industry. Since 2016, it has benefited from the High Patronage of the President of Romania and is recognized as a strategic project by the Ministry of Culture. The fair's commitment to fostering literary exchange and celebrating authors underscores its importance in promoting reading and cultural dialogue within Romania and beyond.
