Bordeaux considers total evacuation as wildfires approach

Wildfires raging in southwestern France are now a mere 15 kilometers from the major city of Bordeaux, prompting officials to consider a full evacuation. "It is about 15 kilometers from the main roads into the city," Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave stated, according to Reuters.

A spokesperson for the Bordeaux city council told Sky News that authorities are prepared to evacuate the entire city if necessary, as they "consider all possible scenarios." The air quality in Bordeaux has significantly deteriorated due to smoke from the fires.

This region, home to roughly 260,000 people within the city and 800,000 in its greater metropolitan area, has already seen 220,000 residents evacuated from surrounding areas in the Gironde and Landes departments. French authorities have deployed over 5,200 firefighters, soldiers, and police officers to combat the blazes and manage evacuations.

Farmers from other parts of France have offered assistance, with one 65-year-old farmer, Pascal Roudier, telling Reuters, "We are here to lend a hand, because if it were our region, we would also wish for others to do the same." The fires have burned 42,000 hectares in Gironde, though the impact on the world-renowned Bordeaux vineyards remains unclear.
