Borno State closes school after 42 students abducted by insurgents

The Borno State Government has temporarily closed the Government Day Secondary School in Mussa, located in Askira/Uba Local Government Area, and relocated its students following the abduction of 42 students by suspected insurgents.

The decision was announced by the state's Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, on Monday during a visit to the Mussa community. This visit was part of the government's ongoing response to the incident and followed an earlier sympathy visit by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on May 19.

As part of immediate safety measures under the Safe Schools Initiative, the commissioner directed the temporary closure of Government Day Secondary School, Mussa, and approved its relocation to Government Secondary School, Uba, where students are expected to continue their education in safer, more secure conditions.

During the visit, Wakilbe conveyed the government's sympathy and solidarity to the parents of the abducted students. He assured them that intensified efforts are underway to ensure the safe rescue of the children. Governor Zulum reiterated his administration's commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of students across the state.

They highlighted the severe emotional and psychological trauma the families have endured since the abduction. The government also inspected ongoing projects and facilities at various schools in Uba to ensure adequate learning environments.
