Borussia Dortmund’s Giannis Konstantelias Suffers Torn ACL in Left Knee

Giannis Konstantelias’ promising Borussia Dortmund debut ended with a serious knee injury and a lengthy absence from football.

The 23-year-old Greek midfielder tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Dortmund’s Bundesliga match against Hamburg. He had joined the club from PAOK Thessaloniki this summer as one of its major signings.

Konstantelias had already played a role in Dortmund’s victory at Signal Iduna Park, taking a shot inside the area that an opponent diverted into his own goal for the team’s second goal. He twisted his knee in a challenge early in the second half and left the field on foot, with Marcel Sabitzer replacing him.

Medical tests confirmed the extent of the injury on Sunday. Dortmund’s official account said, "Giannis Konstantelias suffered a torn ligament in his left knee during his Bundesliga debut against Hamburg last Saturday and will therefore be out for several months. The entire BVB family is with you, Giannis. You will come back stronger!"
