Bosnian Grahovo Capture Sealed Fate of Krajina Before Operation Storm's Main Assault

Operation Storm, the 1995 Croatian military offensive, is frequently portrayed as a rapid victory that crushed the self-proclaimed Republic of Srpska Krajina (RSK) within days. However, declassified military and diplomatic documents reveal a more complex reality.

The offensive was not the beginning of the end, but rather the final act in a series of interconnected operations. These preceding actions, conducted over months, meticulously laid the groundwork for the RSK's collapse. The true turning point, according to these documents, occurred weeks before the main assault on Knin.

On the Dinaric front, between Livno, Bosansko Grahovo, and Glamoč, Croatian forces executed a critical maneuver. They successfully severed the primary communication and supply line connecting Knin to the hinterland of the RSK. Bosansko Grahovo, a key logistical hub linking Knin with Drvar and Serbia, was captured. This action effectively cut off Knin's access to essential personnel, ammunition, and fuel, rendering its defenses untenable before the first Croatian shells even fell on the city.

The strategic importance of this capture cannot be overstated. It represented the breaking of the "strategic backbone" of the Krajina "quasi-state" on the Bosnian karst, long before the final push into Croatia.
