Bougainville Parliament to consider independence referendum results

Bougainville is one step closer to independence as the parliament of Papua New Guinea begins deliberations on the results of a 2019 referendum. In that vote, an overwhelming 97.7% of residents in the autonomous region supported secession from Papua New Guinea.

The process has been lengthy, involving years of negotiations between the national and regional governments. The parliament's consideration of the referendum is a crucial step, though the date for a vote has not yet been set. Bougainville, an archipelago with approximately 370,000 inhabitants, has a long-standing movement advocating for independence.

Bougainvillean leaders have set ambitious targets, aiming for greater self-governance by September 2027 and full sovereignty by 2030. This push for independence stems largely from decades of dissatisfaction concerning control over revenues from the now-closed Panguna copper and gold mine, as well as the lingering impact of a civil war that claimed thousands of lives.

A peace agreement in 2001 ended the conflict and included a provision to postpone the independence referendum. The current parliamentary review marks a significant development in the region's decades-long quest for self-determination.
