Brač Wildfire Contained; Houses Protected by Firefighters and Aircraft

A wildfire erupted on the island of Brač, Croatia, near the settlement of Pučišća early on August 13, 2026. The fire, which started around 2:30 AM, involves grass, low vegetation, and forest in a difficult-to-access area.

Strong winds fueled the rapid spread of the fire. However, firefighting forces on the ground, comprising 65 firefighters with 20 vehicles from Brač and Split, along with four Canadair CL-415 aircraft, worked to contain the blaze. Additional support arrived from the Split-Dalmatine County, including 47 firefighters and 10 vehicles.

"The fire spread quickly, aided by strong winds. Firefighting forces on the ground successfully repelled the fire from the houses," stated Chief Fire Commander Slavko Tucaković. Aerial units were deployed in the morning, and further ground support is arriving. The houses in the area have been defended from the flames.

Given the weather conditions that favor fire development, the Croatian Firefighting Association has called for public caution and reminded citizens of the strict ban on lighting fires in nature. The total area burned is currently unestimated due to the challenging terrain.
