Brazil election: Lula and Bolsonaro neck-and-neck in polls ahead of October vote

Brazil's presidential election on October 4 is entering an intense phase, with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro locked in a virtual tie in major polls, indicating a strong possibility of a second-round runoff. This contest will determine the country's direction for the next four years and could influence a regional shift toward the right.

A national poll by Nexus, commissioned by BTG Pactual, suggests that President Lula da Silva would narrowly defeat Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a simulated second-round election, with 47% of the vote compared to Bolsonaro's 43%. This difference falls within the two-point margin of error, classifying the outcome as a technical tie. The survey, conducted between July 24 and 26 among 2,004 electors, has a 95% confidence level.

However, the scenario appears reversed in Rio de Janeiro. According to a Genial/Quaest poll reported by O Globo, Bolsonaro would edge out Lula in a hypothetical second round, with 38% of the vote compared to Lula's 35%. This result also falls within the three-point margin of error, leaving the winner undecided.

In Brazil, if no candidate secures more than 50% of the valid votes in the first round, the top two contenders proceed to a runoff. The Nexus/BTG national poll also indicates Lula holds a clearer advantage in the first round, with 42% of voter intentions, followed by Bolsonaro with 33%. Other candidates, including Ronaldo Caiado and Romeu Zema, trail significantly.
