Flávio Bolsonaro, a prominent right-wing Brazilian presidential candidate, met with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday. The meeting, shared on social media platform X, showed the two politicians together in the Oval Office. Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, who was recently sentenced to a lengthy prison term for a coup attempt against the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Jair Bolsonaro, a close ally of Trump, served as president from 2019 to 2022. Trump has previously accused Brazil of conducting a witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro. The former Brazilian president was convicted in September of plotting a coup against his political rival, Lula, after Lula won the 2022 presidential election. Jair Bolsonaro maintains his innocence, claiming he is a victim of political persecution. Flávio Bolsonaro is seeking to unseat the leftist Lula in the upcoming October presidential election. However, the right-wing candidate's campaign has recently faced a political crisis. According to Reuters, Bolsonaro sought the meeting with Trump to gain support as his current polling numbers are unfavorable. The domestic crisis stems from Bolsonaro's admission that he asked a jailed banker, accused of fraud, for money to fund a film about his father.
