Brazil's Health Ministry Launches Campaign Against Online Betting Harms

Brazil's Ministry of Health has initiated a nationwide campaign to address the growing problem of online betting, commonly known as 'bets.' The initiative, launched on Sunday, aims to educate the public about the potential harms associated with problematic gambling and highlight available resources for mental health support and treatment within the public health system (SUS).

Advertisements for the campaign are being broadcast across television, radio, and social media platforms, coinciding with the return of major sporting events like the Brazilian Championship and post-World Cup tournaments, where online betting sites are prominent sponsors. The campaign specifically targets the risks of excessive gambling and informs citizens where they can seek help, including specialized teletherapy for gambling-related issues accessible via the Meu SUS Digital app.

In-person support is also available at Basic Health Units (UBS) and Psychosocial Care Centers (Caps). The government views the increasing prevalence of gambling-related emotional distress and family indebtedness as a significant concern. To combat this, a platform was established in December 2025 allowing individuals to voluntarily block their access to betting sites, a feature already utilized by approximately 1 million people.

Furthermore, the federal government has imposed stricter regulations on betting advertisements, prohibiting associations with investment or financial gain. Mandatory warnings about the risks of betting must now be included in all promotional materials. This campaign reflects a concerted effort to mitigate the negative social and economic impacts of the booming online betting industry in Brazil.
