Brazil's Podemos declares election neutrality, blocking Bolsonaro's VP choice

Brazil's Podemos party has declared neutrality in the upcoming 2026 presidential election, a move that effectively blocks its national president, Renata Abreu, from joining Flávio Bolsonaro's presidential ticket as his vice president.

The decision followed consultations Abreu held with the party's state chapters. Internally, the neutral stance is seen as a strategy to preserve votes in states where President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva holds significant support. Additionally, allies of Abreu noted the challenges the party would face in nationally adopting Bolsonaro's assertive ideological platform.

Podemos's primary objective is to expand its representation in Brazil's Congress. The party recently celebrated a significant increase in its congressional delegation, growing from 15 to 27 deputies during the party realignment window. This focus on legislative power appears to outweigh the potential benefits of a presidential alliance.

Bolsonaro faces increasing difficulty in securing a vice presidential candidate. The Progressive Party (PP) and the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) have also declared neutrality, further limiting his options. This situation heightens the possibility that Bolsonaro's Liberal Party (PL) may have to run a "pure ticket," with both presidential and vice presidential candidates from within the same party. The deadline for party conventions is August 5.
