Brazil's PT Taps Former Minister Patrus Ananias for Minas Gerais Governor Bid After Lula's Appeal

Former Minister of Social Development and Combat Against Hunger, Patrus Ananias, has accepted the Workers' Party (PT) invitation to run for governor of Minas Gerais, a move seen as a strategic effort to bolster President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's political standing in the state.

Ananias, who also served as mayor of Belo Horizonte and is currently a federal deputy, agreed to the candidacy after a direct appeal from Lula. The president reportedly invoked emotional reasoning, stating that he needed Ananias for "Minas to return to what it was." This personal request led Ananias to forgo a near-certain re-election to the Chamber of Deputies.

The PT's decision to field its own candidate in Minas Gerais, Brazil's second-largest electoral college, came after months of waiting for Senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSB) to declare his intentions. Pacheco, the former president of the Senate, ultimately decided against running, leaving the PT to pursue its own gubernatorial bid.

Initially, the PT had considered Marília Campos, the former mayor of Contagem, but she opted to run for senator. Ananias's candidacy is now set to be officially announced on Monday. The PT-MG confirmed that Ananias met with President Lula to discuss the state's political landscape and strategic projects, including educational initiatives and solutions for the state's debt. The party stated that official announcements regarding the gubernatorial candidacy will be made at the appropriate time.
