Brazil: Senator Moro defends party leader Costa Neto over past mistakes

Senator Sérgio Moro has publicly defended Valdemar Costa Neto, the president of Brazil's Liberal Party (PL), asserting that Costa Neto has already faced consequences for his past transgressions. "The mistakes he made in the past, he has already paid for," Moro stated, adding that Costa Neto "served his sentence and is, evidently, in a different situation at the current moment."

Moro, a former judge in the Lava Jato operation, made these remarks during an interview with UOL and Folha de S.Paulo, addressing questions about potential alliances with Costa Neto for the upcoming 2026 elections. He expressed surprise at certain decisions, noting that they did not allege any misuse of parliamentary amendment funds. Moro clarified his own practice with amendments, stating he directs suggestions but makes the final decisions, and highlighted his allocation of R$69 million to philanthropic hospitals in Paraná over the last four years.

During the same interview, Moro outlined his vision for Paraná, promising to elevate the state to a "model of excellence" by focusing on public security, health, education, and infrastructure. He also voiced concerns about potential government interference in the Federal Police, drawing parallels to his departure from the Ministry of Justice in 2020 due to disagreements with then-President Jair Bolsonaro.
