Brazilian Bar Association to Stay Neutral in 2026 Elections

The Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) will maintain a position of strict neutrality in the upcoming 2026 elections, distancing itself from both the left and the right political spectrums. Beto Simonetti, president of the OAB, announced this stance during the Federal Council's first plenary session since the campaign began.

"We will remain absolutely equidistant from political-party disputes submitted to society's choice. We will not be with the right nor with the left," Simonetti declared. He stressed that the OAB's role is to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and that the outcome reflects the sovereign will of the people.

The organization pledged to collaborate closely with the Electoral Justice system across Brazil. Its objective is to ensure the campaign adheres to all relevant legislation and proceeds with "normality and serenity." Simonetti highlighted the importance of "balance, respect for due process, equality of opportunities, and full observance of constitutional guarantees" for a legitimate democratic outcome.

This declaration comes as Brazil prepares for its general elections, where campaign financing, including public funds like the electoral and party funds, is a significant topic. The OAB's commitment to impartiality aims to bolster public confidence in the democratic institutions and the electoral results.
