Brazilian fugitive sentenced for homicide arrested in Paraguay

Paraguayan authorities have apprehended a Brazilian citizen wanted for homicide in his home country, where he is set to serve a sentence of 24 years and 10 months. The arrest took place in Tavapy, located in the southern region of Alto Paraná, during an early morning operation on Thursday led by agents from the Department against Organized Crime.

The arrested individual, identified as Vargas Quintiliano da Costa, 52, initially attempted to mislead officers by presenting a Paraguayan identity card under the name Daniel Freitas de Siqueira. However, investigators utilized the Tripartite Command system, which facilitates cross-border information exchange, to verify his identity. This verification confirmed that Vargas Quintiliano da Costa is indeed the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Court of Justice of the State of Goiás, Brazil, for a homicide conviction.

In addition to the charges in Brazil, the man is also under investigation in Paraguay. He is implicated in a case involving the "mediate production of public documents of false content" and other related offenses. Following his detention, Vargas Quintiliano da Costa was transferred to the police headquarters. Authorities will now determine whether he should first face legal proceedings in Paraguay for the charges filed there or if he will be directly expelled and handed over to Brazilian authorities to begin serving his sentence.
