Brazilian player suspended until injured rival recovers

In a move that has sparked global discussion, Brazilian football player Víctor Gabriel has been handed an extraordinary suspension: he cannot play until the opponent he severely injured, Gabriel Pec, is medically cleared to return to training.

The incident occurred during a Brasileirao match between Internacional and Cruzeiro. With Cruzeiro leading 1-0, Gabriel, who had just entered the second half, committed a brutal foul on Pec. The tackle, with studs forward, struck Pec's left leg, causing a visible and severe injury. The referee immediately issued a red card.

Subsequent medical examinations revealed Pec suffered a fractured tibia, requiring surgery and an estimated three to four months of recovery. Pec, who has since undergone surgery, expressed his focus on rehabilitation via social media. "Thank you very much for the kind messages. Now I have to focus on recovery," he stated.

The Superior Tribunal of Justice of Sport (STJD) deemed the standard suspension of one to six games insufficient given the severity of the injury. In an exceptional decision, they ruled that Gabriel will remain sidelined for up to 180 days, or until Pec receives the green light from medical staff to resume training. This unprecedented penalty has generated significant controversy within Brazilian football.
