Breaking: Tinubu directs EFCC to vacate order freezing Osun Govt account

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has intervened in the controversy surrounding the freezing of the Osun State Government's accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He directed the EFCC on Thursday to immediately seek a court order to vacate the freeze. The President expressed concern over the timing of the EFCC's action, which occurred shortly before the Osun State gubernatorial election. Tinubu stated that while he supports the independent discharge of statutory responsibilities by anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, actions taken by federal institutions can be misconstrued as politically motivated interference. He noted that steps taken by such agencies are often attributed to him, even without his prior knowledge. The President affirmed his commitment to allowing strong democratic institutions to operate independently, free from fear, favor, or political interference. However, he believes the timing of the EFCC's action was inappropriate, particularly given the proximity to the election. To preserve confidence in the integrity and fairness of the democratic process, Tinubu felt compelled to intervene. He has instructed the EFCC to withdraw its action against the Osun State Government.
