Breiðablik Eliminated from Champions League After Penalty Shootout Failure

Breiðablik's Champions League campaign has ended in disappointment after a penalty shootout loss to Aktobe from Kazakhstan. The Icelandic champions were eliminated in the second qualifying round following a 1-1 draw that extended to penalties.

Despite a strong start from the home team, who took the lead in the 12th minute through Yekaterina Babshuk, Breiðablik quickly equalized four minutes later with a goal from Katelyn Doung. The score remained tied at halftime and through the remainder of regular time and extra time, with neither side able to find a decisive goal.

The match's turning point came during the penalty shootout, where Breiðablik's shooters faltered, missing all four of their attempts. Aktobe, in contrast, secured their victory by scoring two of their three penalties. A controversial moment occurred in extra time when a penalty awarded to Breiðablik was overturned after the referee consulted with her assistant.

Breiðablik will now play for third place in the competition against Belarusian champions Dinamo Minsk, with a spot in the Europa League also at stake.
