Brenner: ‘The happiest day of my life as a cyclist’

Marco Brenner called his victory on the Alto de La Pandera the happiest day of his life as a cyclist. The German rider, representing Tudor, won the Vuelta a España’s 14th stage after overcoming illness and a crash in the preceding days.

“I think it’s the best day of my life as a cyclist. I still can’t believe it. I wasn’t feeling well, I didn’t feel like myself, and I had been carrying a few days of illness, as well as a crash. I really wanted to show myself. I’ve worked to live a day like this,” Brenner said.

Brenner, 24, completed Tudor’s work after a duel with Colombia’s Santiago Buitrago. Two teammates in the breakaway helped set up the finish, and Brenner said he began to feel stronger on the final climb.

Buitrago passed him after Brenner made his move, but the German caught him and won the sprint. “You live for days like today, I think. Not many cyclists can win a stage in a grand tour, and adding it to my record is incredible,” he said.
