Brexit rules block Liverpool's 18-year-old defender from competitive football

Liverpool's highly-rated 18-year-old defender, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, faces a significant hurdle in his burgeoning career due to post-Brexit regulations. Despite impressing during the club's pre-season campaign under new manager Andoni Iraola, Ndukwe will be unable to play in competitive matches for Liverpool in 2026. He has not met the required points for a UK work permit, a GBE.

Ndukwe, who joined Liverpool from Austria Vienna for £2.6 million, has featured prominently in pre-season, even starting alongside captain Virgil van Dijk in a match against Monaco. Van Dijk himself praised the teenager, calling him a "big talent" who is eager to learn.

The issue stems from the UK's work permit system implemented after Brexit, which mandates overseas players meet specific criteria. Ndukwe's situation is further complicated by Liverpool's limited Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) slots. The club has only one ESC place available, which has already been allocated to another player, Mor Talla Ndiaye. This leaves Ndukwe with limited options for competitive play.

Consequently, Ndukwe is likely to be sent out on loan to continue his development and accumulate the necessary experience and points to qualify for a work permit. His agent, Georg Lederer, previously stated that a loan club would be sought to provide high-level experience. Liverpool is expected to make a decision on his future within the next fortnight.
