British Family Among Over 1,500 Missing After Devastating Nepal Flash Floods

A four-member family from Surrey, England, is among the growing number of missing persons following devastating flash floods that swept through Nepal and the border region with Tibet. The family, identified as Surabhi Sahu, 44, a former Miss India UK winner; her husband Santosh, 46; their 18-year-old son Spandan; and 13-year-old daughter Syna, were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.

The family was traveling through Nepal to Tibet, where they planned a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a sacred site for Hindus and Buddhists.

They were last in contact while crossing the border between Nepal and Tibet when a massive torrent of ice, mud, and rocks hit the Gyirong border crossing. Rescue teams are struggling to access the affected areas due to destroyed roads, landslides, and communication outages. Travel organizers have been unable to reach members of the group, though hope remains that some survivors may be awaiting rescue.

The official death toll in Nepal has climbed to 469 as of Friday, with over 1,500 people still unaccounted for. China has reported three fatalities in the Tibet region. The Sahu family, described by neighbors and friends as highly respected community members, are among other British nationals also reported missing.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a glacial collapse event of magnitude 5.2, and scientists are examining seismic and satellite data to determine the precise cause of the catastrophe. Authorities have warned of the potential for further floods due to the newly formed lake upstream.
