Brussels designates ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox as platforms facing strict requirements

ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox have joined the European Union’s list of very large online services, bringing them under some of the bloc’s toughest digital rules. The European Commission said the three services each exceed 45 million monthly users in the EU.

ChatGPT received the designation of a very large online search engine, while Reddit and Roblox were classified as very large online platforms. They now have four months, until the end of November, to meet additional obligations under the Digital Services Act.

Those requirements include assessing and reducing systemic risks linked to illegal content, harm to minors, users’ physical and mental well-being, fundamental rights, electoral processes and public security. The Commission will also have investigative powers to examine the services’ features and connected systems when necessary.

Enforcement will be shared with national digital-services coordinators. Ireland’s Coimisiún na Meán will work with the Commission on ChatGPT and Reddit, while the Authority for Consumers and Markets will assist with oversight of Roblox in the Netherlands. The Commission said 28 online platforms and search engines have now been designated as very large services under the Digital Services Act.
