Bucharest builds three retention basins to reduce flood risk

Bucharest is undertaking a significant infrastructure project to combat increasing flood risks, with the construction of three major stormwater retention basins. Mayor Ciprian Ciucu emphasized the necessity of these basins to prepare the city for the next 50 to 100 years, as the current sewage system is overwhelmed by torrential rains.

One basin, located on Drumul Lunca Cetății in Sector 3, is already finished. This facility includes two underground tanks: one for stormwater with a 2,000 cubic meter capacity and another for wastewater serving about 10,000 residents. The final touches on the surface and a nearly two-kilometer sewage network are expected to be completed by spring 2028.

Work has commenced on a second basin in the Tineretului area, on Secerei Street. This underground basin will have a capacity of 4,200 cubic meters, designed to collect rainwater from a 13-hectare area. It is projected to be finished in approximately two years, with an additional year for sewage network construction.

The third basin is planned for installation beneath the parking area at the entrance to Carol Park, with its feasibility study currently underway. The city administration is also exploring the possibility of constructing two additional large basins under Izvor and Operelor Parks in collaboration with Apa Nova Bucureşti. Mayor Ciucu has pledged personal involvement to secure European funding for these crucial projects.
