Bucharest Mayor Ciucu faces bribery charges; President Dan says issues predate his current role

Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan has stated that the accusations brought by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) against Mayor Ciprian Ciucu do not concern Ciucu's current activities as mayor of the capital. "As far as I understand, these are matters that do not concern his activity at the Bucharest City Hall, and therefore it is normal for him to continue," Dan commented from Brussels.

Ciprian Ciucu, the general mayor of Bucharest, was placed under judicial control by DNA prosecutors on charges of accepting bribes. The alleged offenses occurred during his tenure as mayor of Sector 6. According to the DNA, in November 2025, individuals M.N.K.A. and M.M. allegedly offered undue benefits in the form of advertising and electoral consultancy services to support Ciucu's political and electoral activities. These services were provided in exchange for favorable administrative procedures related to a real estate project.

Ciucu, a member of the National Liberal Party, appeared at the DNA headquarters and declared his innocence. He stated he has nothing to hide and will cooperate with the investigation. In a Facebook post, Ciucu expressed his surprise and frustration over the situation, asserting that he has actively worked to limit corruption during his public service.

The DNA's investigation suggests that S.I. facilitated these benefits, aware of the participants' intentions and contributing to the connection between those offering the advantages and Mayor Ciucu, who allegedly received them in connection with his official duties concerning the real estate project.
