Bucharest Park May Be Renamed for Gymnastics Legend Nadia Comăneci

Bucharest's Izvor Park could soon bear the name of Romanian gymnastics legend Nadia Comăneci. Mayor Ciprian Ciucu announced on Monday that the park might be renamed "Nadia Comăneci Park" to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her historic achievement – the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history, which she earned at the 1976 Montreal Games. The proposal to rename the park was put forth by the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR). Ciucu stated he would present the proposal to the General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest for consideration. He emphasized that the initiative is not his own but comes from the COSR, acknowledging Comăneci's significant impact. "Nadia Comăneci inspired generations of athletes and is part of the pantheon of Romanian sport," Ciucu remarked on Facebook, adding that her accomplishments are solely her own and her generation's. The announcement follows other recent tributes to Comăneci, including the inauguration of the "Nadia Comăneci" Gymnastics Hall in Otopeni, funded by the Ion Țiriac Foundation, which also features a statue of the gymnast. Additionally, national airline TAROM has named one of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft "Nadia Comăneci" as part of a project to honor personalities who have promoted Romania's image internationally.
